Taranaki offers visitors a unique experience of garden excellence and variety. You will see an extraordinary grouping of private and public gardens unmatched in New Zealand with an amazing array of plants and trees in designed and natural environments. This is an opportunity for you to wander and absorb the heritage that makes Taranaki the Heart of New Zealand's gardens.
These are garden for all seasons, but are at their best from Spring to Autumn.The following itineraries are suggestions only - as the tours are self driven and self guided, visitors are able to alter the order as they wish. It is strongly recommended to carry a detailed road map and city map -available from accommodation places and Information Centres
GROUP TOURS
The tour options can be adapted for group tours. They can be shifted into different patterns to accommodate particular needs, time availability or other travel plans. The visits to each garden will include a guided tour by the garden owner, and access to refreshments and toilets.

Tour 1: The Full Tour Visit eight of the best gardens in New Zealand, all located within easy distance of each other yet demonstrating the wide range of gardening and plants possible in the favoured conditions of Taranaki. This tour is ideal for all seasons. 1) Tikorangi - The Jury Garden Allow one and a half hours. Drive time to Te Kainga Marire 20 mins. 2) Te Kainga Marire Allow one hour. Drive time to Pukekura Park and Brooklands 10 mins. 3) Pukekura Park and Brooklands Allow two hours. Drive time to Woodleigh Gardens 15 mins. 4) Woodleigh Gardens) Allow one hour. Drive time to Ngamamaku 2 mins 5) Ngamamaku Allow one hour. Drive time to Pukeiti 15 mins. 6) Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust Allow two and half hours. Café on site. Drive time to New Plymouth 30 mins. or Drive time to Te Popo one hour. 7) Te Popo Gardens Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to Hollard Gardens 20 mins 8) Hollard Gardens Allow one and a half hours. Tour 2: The Plant Lover's Tour Designed for visitors who are very keen on different plants and want to see the widest range possible used in garden settings by some of the country's top plantspeople. New Zealand 1) Te Kainga Marire Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to Tikorangi -20 minutes. 2) Tikorangi - The Jury Garden Allow two hours. Drive time to Pukeiti -50 minutes. 3) Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust. (Café on site). Allow two and a half hours. Drive time to Woodleigh Gardens -15 minutes. 4) Woodleigh Gardens Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to New Plymouth -15 minutes. Hollard Gardens in South Taranaki is also a plantsperson's paradise and may be visited at no additional charge. It's location makes it an ideal garden to visit when entering or leaving Taranaki by its southern access route. |

Tour 3: The Magnolia and Rhododendron Tour Taranaki is gaining an international reputation for its stunning display of deciduous magnolias (best in late August and September) and has long been acknowledged as a major destination for lovers of rhododendrons (flowering from August to Christmas, peak time October). 1) Ngamamaku Allow one hour. Drive time to Pukeiti -15mins. 2) Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust Café on site. Allow two and a half hours minimum. | Tour 4: The New Zealand Native Plants and Gardens Tour
New Zealand has a unique flora and while most gardens use some native plants, this tour is designed for those who wish to focus particularly on gardens which feature plants unique to this country. This tour is ideal for all seasons. 1) Te Kainga Marire Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to Pukeiti 30mins. 2) Pukeiti Rhododendron Trust Café on site. Allow two and a half hours minimum. Drive time to Te Popo one hour. 3) Te Popo Gardens Allow one hour minimum. 4) Hollard Gardens Drive time from Te Popo 20 mins. 5) Egmont National Park which includes Mount Taranaki, offers easy access to native bush walks from Dawson Falls (close to Hollard Gardens), the Stratford Mountain House and the North Egmont Visitor Centre. |

Tour 5: The Large Country Gardens Tour With an abundance of land and soft growing conditions, Taranaki excels in large country gardens, usually developed and maintained by the owners themselves. Whereas internationally gardens of this scale tend to be limited to wealthy owners, the New Zealand large garden ethic is quite different. These gardens show what can be achieved with hard work and dedication and the phenomenal growth rate and range of plants that can be grown. This tour is ideal for all seasons. 1) Woodleigh Gardens 15 minutes from New Plymouth along Surf Highway 45,. Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to Ngamamaku 2 mins. 2) Ngamamaku Allow one hour minimum. Drive time to Tikorangi 40 mins. 3) Tikorangi - The Jury Garden Allow one and a half hours minimum. Drive time to Te Popo 45 minutes. 4) Te Popo Gardens Allow one hour minimum. 5) Hollard Gardens Drive time from Te Popo 20 mins. |

| Extended Tours: We are able to provide advice on Gardens to Visit on the way to and from Taranaki. These will be gardens that have also obtained Garden of Significance rating by the New Zealand Gardens Trust. |
